Time Between Your Fingers
a film by Jens Schanze
Germany | in preparation | documentary
For nearly two decades, Volker Gerling has been a flipbook cinematographer. There probably aren’t many others in the world who share his career. On foot, he traverses Germany, Austria and Switzerland for weeks, months on end. He has also hiked through England, Canada and the Netherlands, tent and gear in tow. Some of his encounters with the people he meets along the way develop into situations of great intensity. In these cases, he takes photographs of his acquaintances – not just once, but thirty-six times. From these thirty-six images of analog 35mm film, he will later produce a flip book. What compels this artist on? And what is it that makes his flip books so fascinating to the viewer?
